Episode 009: Scott Pilgrim Is Dead (aka-Farewell, Days Of Youth)

After months of tweets, blogs, podcasts, and even Q & A visits, the boys at Combo Attack!! see no recourse, this is it. As Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic opus receives a somewhat rushed dvd/Blu-ray release on November 9th, it only felt right to give our favorite Toronto kids the sendoff they deserve in a near 90-minute free for all featuring a most unique of guests!

Adventures On Infant Island co-host, Jenny Park joins us for the festivities as we not only discuss the film, but also of geek royalty past and present, and even plumb the depths of Rock N’ Roll movie history!

Let the bonuses begin!

And then a little more regarding the film version’s kinetic assault!

Oh ok…How about the whole affair we attended via Edgar himself?

combo attack presents: nightmare fuel part three:joel

And so the October series comes to an appropriately spooky close.

This time, it’s up to our ever quirky game child, Joel to dish out memories of a scare tale from our most recent past. To be honest, we didn’t expect this to be the pick since it is essentially a remake, but sometimes..just sometimes, exceptions do happen. Welcome to that one exception when talking J-horror revamps!

Dig in as Joel and the CA team chat up a chiller of the video age.

combo attack presents: nightmare fuel part two:mike

Our October celebration rages on with another nerve-shredding selection from the video vault.

Once again digging from the cinematic mass graveyard of the 1970s came the unbridled power of the italian horror film in a powerhouse from gialli favorite, Dario Argento. Short on logic, and unrelenting on the terror, even the trailer for this film is enough to scare grown men off of sleep for a few nights.

Mike recollects, and shares his love of this 1977 classic.

Gas up your chainsaws & start prepping the chili, it’s time for..

Continuing our celebration of October, and all things eerie, it felt right to pull in and focus on a favorite pastime of ours – Horror On Home Video!

Combo Attack!! offers a special three-part series of shortcasts centering on what Alain, Joel, and Mike think of when the summer comes to a close, and the spirits of the dead begin calling again.

First episode centers on a piece of classic 70s travelogue in the form of the quintessential Tobe Hooper classic…

Episode 007 – The Flesh Of The Matter (Re:The Original Dead Trilogy)

Low on ammunition, supplies, and hope. The CA team is barricading all doors and windows…but they aren’t alone.

Diving headlong into our October series of Combo Attack!! shows, we figured it was time to lay a great geek trope to rest by taking it out the most rudimentary way we know how..from the source. Next to the vampire, fewer modern monsters have gained the pop culture traction quite like the lumbering, moaning, flesh-gnashing zombie. So it only felt natural to take this ever popular concept, and talk the seminal works of one George A. Romero, as we examine the scares & social impact of his original Dead trilogy!

And for just this purpose, we also have on our show, special guest in the form of So-Cal filmmaker, DJ, performance artist, and professed zombiphile, Manuel Gomez (aka @DjLoVeDaY on Twitter!).

From the inimitable classic Night Of The Living Dead, the consumerism-gone madness that is Dawn Of The Dead, and through the grimy 80s apoca-fest, Day Of The Dead, the intrepid four will attempt to navigate, and survive the perils of geek cliche, by sharing views, memories & little known facts about these legendary pieces of horror history, and perhaps why they have become such a staple of fan films, convention panels, and websites.
